Pediatric Eye Exams

The American Optometric Association, known as AOA, recommends that babies need their first full eye exams when they are about six months old. It can also be done on younger babies as well. They then need to see an optometrist when they are about two to three years old as well as right before they go to kindergarten. The AOA also recommends that children who are of school age should see the eye doctor every other year if they don't need any vision correction methods. If they do wear eyeglasses or contacts, they need an annual exam to keep their prescription up to date.

Early Intervention

When you bring a child in for a full eye exam, the optometrist can catch any vision problems before they get worse. There may be treatments that your child needs to help with vision problems. Many children have eye problems such as crossed eyes or lazy eyes, and these may require the use of eye drops, eye patches, or glasses. Myopia, nearsightedness, is also common in children, and this can be corrected with eyeglasses or contacts, as needed.
