What is pink eye? 

Pink eye occurs when the conjunctiva is inflamed and can be caused by allergies or an infection. Most people with pink eye experience red or swollen eyes and a sticky discharge. The condition can occur in one or both eyes and some types of conjunctivitis are highly contagious. 

How do you get pink eye?

There are four leading causes of pink eye, and only two, viral and bacterial conjunctivitis, are highly contagious. Viral and bacterial conjunctivitis speed quickly from person to person by direct contact, interaction with an infected object, or can be airborne. What are some symptoms of pink eye?

Pink eye can show up in various ways and mainly depends on the root cause of the condition. Symptoms typically start in one eye and can spread to the other within a few days. Some symptoms that are not contagious can include red or pink color in the eye, swelling, itchiness, and watering eyes. In addition, some people experience mucus discharge and pain. 

How can pink eye be treated? 

In many cases, symptoms that are contagious and those that are not clear up a week or two. We can prescribe eye drops and medications that can eliminate the pink eye and provide guidance on at-home care. Sometimes placing a cool washcloth on your eyes may provide you with relief.
